We have developed a nationwide network of some of the most capable and talented simultaneous conference interpreters worldwide.

How simultaneous interpretation works

Conference interpreters always do simultaneous interpretation. It involves the interpretation and rendering of the message from the source language to the target language instantaneously as it is spoken by the speaker.  In this mode, the interpreter hears the message and translates it almost immediately.  In a sense, the interpreter is listening and speaking at the same time.  This mode of interpretation requires that communication be in one direction only, from speaker to audience, and it is often done continuously without pauses or interruptions.

Simultaneous interpretation is physically and emotionally demanding. It requires the interpreter’s complete concentration and non-stop oral communication. In order to avoid excessive strain on his or her vocal chords and mental fatigue one interpreter cannot work at it alone. Simultaneous interpreters must work in pairs, taking turns, interpreting 30 to 40 minutes at a time. When one is not interpreting he or she helps the other interpreter as needed, gathering information and following the ongoing speech. There are rare exceptions when a simultaneous interpreter can work alone.

Preparation is key

In order to ensure that our simultaneous interpreters can do an outstanding job at your conference, it is critical that we are provided with information about the speeches or presentations that will be delivered at your event. Even the best interpreters cannot be expected to arrive at a job location and interpret accurately without adequate preparation. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of obtaining the pertinent vocabulary ahead of a simultaneous interpretation project. It makes the difference between success and failure.

What equipment is required for simultaneous interpretation?

Ideally conference interpreters should work inside a sound isolation booth. If the room configuration or budget do not allow for a booth, you should consider renting a tabletop shield which partially blocks the noise to and from the interpreters. The interpreters wear their own headsets through which they listen exclusively to the conference speakers. They then translate what they hear into a microphone connected to an amplifier that transmits their voice to those members of the audience who elect to wear receivers and headsets in order to listen to the interpretation.

Our project managers will guide you so all of your technological and linguistic needs of your event are met, regardless of size and duration. We can supply the necessary simultaneous equipment for your conference or can refer you to reputable Audio Visual equipment companies depending on how your event is designed and configured.

How to order our language services

We suggest you book your interpretation services as many weeks before the event as possible. Professional conference interpreters are in high demand and so by planning ahead you can ensure that the top local interpreters are reserved for you. Alternatively if there are no local interpreters available we can fly them in from another city. If you are on a tight deadline, we can also help you and handle the details for you.
